Winona Ryder recently opened up about her early days in Hollywood.
The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star revealed that Hollywood veteran Jeff Bridges refused to kiss her during an audition for the 1993 film Fearless due to their major age difference.
In a candid interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Ryder, now 52, recounted the incident that occurred when she was around 21 years old.
The actress explained that during the audition, there was a scene that called for a kiss between her character and Bridges’ character.
Ryder said, “Jeff Bridges, who I love, wouldn’t kiss me because I was, like, too young.”
Instead of following through with the scripted kiss, Bridges opted to kiss Ryder’s forehead,
Ryder explained, “I was too young. At the end of the scene he was supposed to kiss me and I was like [waiting to be kissed]”
She also added, “He kissed my forehead.”
“He’s like, ‘You’re, like, my daughter’s age.’ And I was like, ‘No!'”
Bridges was 43 and Ryder was 21 when Fearless hit theaters in October 1993.
Based on Rafael Yglesias’ novel, the film follows a man whose personality undergoes a dramatic transformation after surviving a plane crash.
Isabella Rossellini, Rosie Perez, and John Turturro also starred, with Perez earning an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
While Ryder didn’t secure a role in Fearless, her career continued to thrive.
That same year, she starred in Martin Scorsese‘s “The Age of Innocence,” which earned her an Oscar nomination and marked her transition to more mature roles.
The actress continues to be a prominent figure in Hollywood, with her recent success in the popular Netflix series “Stranger Things” and her upcoming appearance in its final season next year.
Winona Ryder’s latest movie Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has hit theaters.
The film is a sequel to the 1988 film “Beetlejuice” and stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara reprising their roles alongside new cast members Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe.
