Actor and filmmaker Justin Theroux has spoken out on the status of a potential Tropic Thunder 2.
The first movie, which came out in 2008, has been heavily criticised over the years due to Robert Downey Jr.‘s divisive ‘blackface’ role.
However, many viewers don’t seem to understand that character’s comedic point.
That character was designed to mock the practice of method and non-method actors who overcommit to the role, regardless of how offensive their decisions may be.
Theroux told ComicBook that if an idea for a Tropic Thunder sequel ever comes to him, he’d “definitely” go ahead with it.
“I have some stuff already churning that I’d love to do, but I’ll keep it a secret,” he told the outlet.
“Hollywood just gets funnier as the years go on.”
“It never ceases to amaze me how navel-gazing it can be.”
He added: “There’s a million things – we’ve gone through so many movements in Hollywood that I think those would all be somehow in the mix.”
“Listen, if an idea strikes me, like it struck Tim [Burton], where it’s like, ‘Oh, this could be a sequel,’ I’ll definitely do a sequel.”
It’s unknown whether he would bring back all of the original characters or if it would be a new cast altogether, as the sequel itself has yet to become a reality as of writing.
Tropic Thunder has gathered a lot of fans and some say we need a sequel, but many people are sceptical about whether it could happen.
Some commenters think that people nowadays “have lost their sense of humour” and that the “comedy era is over” in Hollywood.
However, many fans of the first movie have long-awaited a sequel, so you never know!
