Baffling reason why Raygun is now the world’s number 1 ranked female breakdancer

After Raygun’s viral performance at the Olympics, some were surprised to discover the breakdancer is currently number one in the World DanceSport Federation's (WDSF) female ranking.

Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn, an academic and breakdancer from New South Wales, Australia, became the talk of the town at the recent Paris Summer Olympics when she competed in breaking.

The 2024 Games, which were the first Olympics to feature the sport, saw Raygun receive a score of zero in competition against Nicka, Sya 'Syssy' Dembele and Logan 'Logistx' Edra.

Despite Raygun’s controversial performance at the Games, Gunn is the number one 'B-Girl' (break-girl) in the September ranking from the World DanceSport Federation.

Meanwhile, Olympic medallists Ami 'Ami' Yuasa, Dominika 'Nicka' Banevic and Liu '671' Qingyi don’t feature on the list.

While the ranking seems to be the result of a bizarre decision-making process, the WDSF shared a statement explaining the criteria to make the list, and how the ranking point system works.

"We would like to take this opportunity to provide clarity on the ranking methodology and address the concerns raised," the WDSF statement began.

"Furthermore, in alignment with the Olympic Qualification System, ranking events were intentionally not held between 31 December 2023 and the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

"This strategic scheduling allowed athletes to focus solely on the last part of their Olympic qualification without the added pressure of additional ranking events."

The WDFS clarified that some athletes find themselves with just one competition result to count towards their ranking after the Olympics.

"Consequently, by the end of the Olympic Games, many of the competition results included in the ranking had expired, leading to the current situation where many athletes have only one competition result contributing to their ranking," the statement continued.

"Due the unique circumstances regarding ranking events this year, it is not unusual in the period immediately following the Olympic Games for some athletes to be ranked according to a single event."

As for Raygun, the Aussie breakdancer will maintain her top spot until the end of October, when her points expire.

Since her performance in Paris, Gunn has shared her decision to stop competing for the time being, but assuring her fans she will continue breaking.

"I don't think I'll be competing for a while. Not really wanting to be in the spotlight, breaking, competing,' she said on The Project.

"It's been nice. It's been a bit of a process to try and start dancing again. Like, that's actually been tough. You know, it was my medicine, and then it turned into my source of stress.

"So, I'm really happy that it gets to go back to being my medicine. I can kind of finally feel free again. I'm looking forward to breaking, but, no, I don't think I'll compete for a while."Featured Image Credit: Rene Nijhuis/BSR Agency/Getty Images/Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

Bizarre theory emerges about why Raygun scored a zero at the Olympic Games
Raygun's viral Olympics performance received a score of zero from the judges

Raygun's zero-point performance at the Paris Olympics was without a doubt the highlight of the Games for many - and it's spawned a baffling fan theory.

Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn, 36, who is a university lecturer by day, broke the internet after she scored zero in all three rounds of heats on Friday (9 August).

Her unique routine consisted of mimicking a kangaroo, writhing on the floor like a snake, and, well, some unexplainable moments.

Despite scoring no points at the Paris Olympics, the dancer remained upbeat after the competition, saying: "All my moves are original. Creativity is really important to me. I go out there and I show my artistry.

"Sometimes it speaks to the judges and sometimes it doesn’t.

"I do my thing, and it represents art. That is what it is about."

As expected, Raygun's performance has sparked a lot of reaction on social media, including a bizarre fan-theory.

Taking to X, one person thought: "Did we pay for Raygun to go to Paris and perform some odd social experiment?"

Another added: "Was Raygun a joke of some sort? Like was this a social experiment for her PhD? Is her name even Raygun???"

"Raygun has got to be a social experiment," a third person agreed.

"I will literally die if Raygun says this was a social experiment," someone else said.

Meanwhile, one of the judges who gave Gunn a zero, said he was a fan of her 'originality'.

Martin Gilian, who goes by 'MGbility', said in a press conference: "Breaking is all about originality and bringing something new to the table and representing your country or region.

"This is exactly what Raygun was doing. She got inspired by her surroundings, which in this case, for example, was a kangaroo.

This is Rachael Gunn, she has a PhD in cultural movement and convinced Australia to pay for her trip to the Paris Olympics. She participated in break dancing and got 0 points. 🐐 😂

"We have five criteria in the competitive judging system and just her level was maybe not as high as the other competitors.

"But again, that doesn't mean that she did really bad. She did her best. She won the Oceania qualifier. Unfortunately for her, the other B-girls were better."

Although we won't be getting breakdancing at the 2028 Games in LA, there are hopes that the category will be included in 2032.

"Our campaign to be added to Brisbane 2032 has already begun and is being ably led by our first vice-president and resident Australian Tony Tilenni," WDSF President Shawn Tay said in a statement.

"Initial reactions from all participants to the breaking presentations, including Brisbane officials at the Australian Olympic Committee’s one year to go to Paris 2024 celebrations, have been highly optimistic about our chances of being added to these Games."

In response, Rachael Gunn's representatives told LADbible: "The taxpayer does not fund the Australian Olympic Team’s campaign – costs are met entirely by the Australian Olympic Committee – which itself receives no Federal funding.

"Rachael Gunn qualified for the Olympic Games by winning the Oceania Qualifying event held in Sydney last year. She receives no Federal funding for her sporting career."

Australian officials reveal reason why Raygun was picked for Olympics after scoring zero
Australian breakdancer Raygun went viral at the Paris Olympics after scoring zero

The Australian sporting body that sent Raygun to the Olympics has defended their decision after her zero-score display in Paris.

Raygun - real name Rachael Gunn - set the Games alight in her own way when she took to the breakdancing podium on Friday (9 August).

The lecturer at Macquarie University, who happens to have a PhD in Cultural Studies, shared a unique dance routine.

It mainly consisted of hopping around like a kangaroo and writhing on the floor like a snake, along with a series of unexplainable moves.

After three rounds of heats she scored zero points, despite some praise from the judges, who called her moves 'original'.

"Breaking is all about originality and bringing something new to the table and representing your country or region," judge Martin Gilian (MGbility) said in a press conference.

"This is exactly what Raygun was doing. She got inspired by her surroundings, which in this case, for example, was a kangaroo."

Assessing her own performance, Gunn said: "All my moves are original. Creativity is really important to me. I go out there and I show my artistry.

"Sometimes it speaks to the judges and sometimes it doesn’t.

"I do my thing, and it represents art. That is what it is about."

Meanwhile, Australian sporting body AusBreaking, who were responsible for sending Raygun to the Olympics, has explained how she was selected.

"The selection process for Australia’s breaking team heading to Paris was conducted over two days, and open to all interested participants in the Oceanic region," they said.

"Adhering to World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) regulations, which align with International Olympic Committee (IOC) standards, the process aimed to ensure a fair and transparent outcome.

"A panel of nine international adjudicators, a head judge and a chairperson who oversaw the competition, using the same judging system at the Paris Games and trained to uphold the highest standards of impartiality."

This is Rachael Gunn, she has a PhD in cultural movement and convinced Australia to pay for her trip to the Paris Olympics. She participated in break dancing and got 0 points. 🐐 😂

AusBreaking continued: "These judges are all highly respected in their respective communities and in the international breaking scene.

"Ultimately, Rachael Gunn and Jeff Dunne emerged as the top performers in exactly the same process, securing their spots to represent Australia in Paris. Their selection was based solely on their performance in their battles on that day.

"In the lead-up to Paris, Raygun used her platform as the Australian Breaking representative to consistently advocate in the media for breaking’s history, artistic and athletic values, and its cultural origins."

The sporting body also said they 'condemn the global online harassment and bullying of Raygun'."

"The pressure to perform on the Olympic stage is immense, especially against the opponents in her particular group. We stand in solidarity with Raygun," they added.Featured Image Credit: Elsa/Getty Images

How Australian breakdancer Raygun managed to qualify for Olympics before scoring zero in Paris
Australian breakdancer Raygun has previously spoken out about her viral Olympics routine

Many will be wondering just how Raygun managed to qualify for the Paris Olympics after she scored zero in three rounds of heats.

Breakdancer Rachael Gunn, known as 'Raygun' in her world, became a viral sensation after representing Australia in the Games on Friday (9 August).

The Sydney university lecturer, 36, failed to score a single point in the breakdancing competition as her routine consisted of hopping like a Kangaroo and writhing on the floor.

Though one of the judges, MGbility (real name Martin Gilian), was a fan of her 'originality'.

"The breaking and hip hop community definitely stands behind her. She was just trying to bring something new, something original and something that represents her country," he told News Corp.

Raygun also admitted: "All my moves are original. Creativity is really important to me. I go out there and I show my artistry.

"Sometimes it speaks to the judges and sometimes it doesn’t.

"I do my thing, and it represents art. That is what it is about."

Meanwhile, viewers are wondering how Gunn managed to qualify for the Olympics in the first place.

It seems that her moves in the WDSF Oceania Breaking Championships in 2023 were replicated at the Games in Paris and it could have been what inspired her inclusion.

Gunn appeared to hold her own whilst competing against fellow breaker Molly in the final, winning 2-1.

Sadly, breakdancing will not be coming to the 2028 Games in LA after the Vice president of Breaking for Gold USA and USA Dance Zack Slusser said: "It was a miracle that we were even in Paris to begin with."

The good news is there is yet hope for it to be included in the Games in 2032.

This is Rachael Gunn, she has a PhD in cultural movement and convinced Australia to pay for her trip to the Paris Olympics. She participated in break dancing and got 0 points. 🐐 😂

"Our campaign to be added to Brisbane 2032 has already begun and is being ably led by our first vice-president and resident Australian Tony Tilenni," WDSF President Shawn Tay said in a statement.

Judge explains why breakdancing star Raygun scored a zero at the Olympic Games
Aussie breakdancer Raygun's routine has made quite the impact on social media

A judge at the Paris Olympics has explained why Australian breakdancer Raygun received a grand total of zero points for her unique performance.

The Paris 2024 Games saw the introduction of breakdancing as a competitive event for the first time ever, with athletes from around the world descending on the French capital to show off their best power moves.

However, the event has since gone viral for all the wrong reasons.

Unless you've been living under a rock - or spent the last couple of weeks with no internet connection - you'll be more than aware of who Australian breakdancer Raygun is.

Raygun, AKA Sydney university lecturer Rachael Gunn, failed to impress the judges with her kangaroo hopping, leaving the competition without scoring a single point - and becoming the face of a brutal wave of memes online.

Now a judge from the breakdancing event has weighed in on Gunn's brutal score, explaining that the 36-year-old was just 'not as high as the other competitors'.

Expressing sympathy with Gunn over the reaction she's received, judge MGbility said: "I feel personally very sorry."

"The breaking and hip hop community definitely stands behind her. She was just trying to bring something new, something original and something that represents her country," he told News Corp.

"We stay with her. We have five criteria in the comparative judging system. Just her level was maybe not as high as the other competitors.

"Again, we're using a comparative judging system. Her competitors were just better but it doesn't mean that she did really bad. She did her best."

MGbility - real name Martin Gilian - went on to add that he believed Gunn's moves were representative of her country, saying: "She was representing Australia and Oceania and did her best.

"She won the Oceania qualifier officially. If some people are wondering how she got into the Olympic Games, she qualified from her region.

"Unfortunately for her, the other b-girls were better. That's why she didn't score any votes in her rounds."

One of the judges has since revealed they feel 'personally sorry' for the 36-year-old. (Elsa/Getty Images)

Speaking about her Olympic performance, Gunn said: "All my moves are original. Creativity is really important to me. I go out there and I show my artistry.

"Sometimes it speaks to the judges, and sometimes it doesn’t. I do my thing, and it represents art. That is what it is about."

It has also been revealed that Gunn's mental health is being monitored, following the online reaction to her routine.

Meanwhile it has since been confirmed that the breakdancing category will not be returning for a second run at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

However anyone wanting to dust off their rest kangaroo hops may have a chance in eight years time, as the World DanceSport Federation is hoping the sport could make a comeback for Brisbane '32.
